Singles 1982 on Bluesky

This tournament will commence tomorrow Friday 29th August.

Four matches will be posted each day, morning and evening until the FIRST ROUND is complete. None at weekends because social.media is quieter – people out there actually have lives to be getting on with!

From the music charts I stole 147 songs including two of your ultimate favourites in Save Your Love and The Birdie Song.

I then added another 17 songs from the indie charts of 1982 which included Love My Way, Wax And Wane and Lets Go To Bed.

The Good Years (Karine Polwart)

I got the idea for this video while travelling home on a train.

I’d thought… the good years… could well be about happy memories… and perhaps childhood ones.

So I collected and edited clips from seven different short films and put them in the sequences I thought fitted best.

And I liked the idea of reversing one of those in the part of the song where the lines are “we’re singing without fears” and “we’re clinging without fears” and ending with a still from the animated film.

That’s it really. Its a short but sweet song that I love very much and it has beautiful melodies.

FULL LYRICS

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

I am happy when I bask in your light
All I ask is that you may bask
All I ask…

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

In my mind I hear the sound
Of every happy fount
Fresh as fresh is found
Fresh as fresh is found

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

We’re singing without tears
We’re clinging without fears

We’re singing without tears
We’re clinging without fears

These the good years
These the good years

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

Wherever you are
You shall be my star
Flashing near or smouldering far

We’re singing without tears
We’re clinging without fears

We’re singing without tears
We’re clinging without fears

The Sun’s Coming Over The Hill (video)

For this video I used a live set of the song with Karine and her band, blended in sequences from a short movie called Hidden (a Scottish short film) plus different views of the Kelpies.

Having to match the studio track to the visuals of the live performance is usually tough going. This isn’t perfect but near enough spot on.

LYRICS

Six rain-ridden summers and he still had an eye for me
He kissed me each evening and told me he’d die for me
And then he ran off the road, full of whisky and irony
He always meant what he said

So I took to whisky so I could recall
The taste of his mouth on my mouth, that’s all
I tried the same trick with a truck but it stalled
The engine was better off dead

Oh the nights are long
But life is longer still
Oh the nights are long
But the sun’s coming over the hill

The taste never left me and I don’t think it will
And it caused me to supplement whisky with pills
But there was something inside that I couldn’t kill
Believe me, I really did try

And there’s some say you get what you deserve but they’re wrong
Sometimes you get what you’re given and then it’s all gone
And you are lucky if you are sufficiently strong
To daily decide not to die

Oh the nights are long
But life is longer still
Oh the nights are long
But the sun’s coming over the hill

I can’t say there’s many things I wouldn’t change
There are better days gone than those that remain
But I can find joy in the sound of the rain
You have to find joy where you can

Oh the nights are long
But life is longer still
Oh the nights are long
But the sun’s coming over the hill

And this is the reason I enjoy making music videos. As Karine says, the nights are long but life is longer still. And you have to find joy where you can. 👍

Scottish Songbook

For our next music poll adventure we are leaving America and packing our bags for Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Most nominations are now in and the provisional draw for the first round has now been made.

This comprises groups of four songs with the two most voted for going through to round two.

Two groups will be posted each day on X on the commencement of the tournament.

What I would hope for is that if people have the time, to take time to listen to the choices in a group, rather than just vote for the most popular artist name which we know tends to happen a lot.

While a tournament will have an eventually winning song, the exercise is more about music-sharing and the discovery of material unheard before. 👍

*ARTISTS MUST HAVE BEEN BORN IN SCOTLAND AND BANDS MUST HAVE BEEN FORMED / ORIGINATE FROM SCOTLAND “

FAVE FLIPSIDES

What happens when you like the B-side of a single more than the A?

Sometimes a B-side, example The Model (Kraftwerk) and We Will Rock You (Queen) become just as well known and loved as their big brother.

In a future Acid Mouse Music poll trip, readers will be invited to submit ten examples of their favourite B-sides.

What wer’e not allowing is double A’s so out go things like Fools Gold and Dreams Of Children.

The hashtag will be #FaveFlipsides on X and I look forward to receiving your submissions.

British One-Hit Wonders

Coming soon, a small tournament focusing on British one-hit wonders.

Starting point may be 64 songs (or higher depending on research).
